Multi-Media Training Resources
This comprehensive educational resource includes the essential documents needed to plan and conduct a local CSR training course that is aligned with recommendations from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), American Heart Association (AHA), and The Joint Commission. The online program can be downloaded upon purchase, gaining immediate access to valuable tools for planning the course, setting up resuscitation stations for temporary pacemakers and resternotomy, and conducting scenario practice using a variety of simulation methods. You receive the most current slides for all lectures, which can also be used within the organization to meet additional training needs (e.g., orientation, skills days, pacemaker classes, etc.). These materials provide organizations with up to date, evidence-based resources for conducting CSR courses using their own trainers, equipment, and internal protocols. No additional instructor training or certifications are required.
The tool-kit contents provide hospital-based trainers with the most current information available for CSR education, grouped into four main files:
- Course management: continuing education documentation, agendas for full and half day programs, room and activity station requirements, 25 pre-and post-test questions, multidisciplinary clinical competency tools for essential roles, frequently asked questions for instructor readiness (with answers and rationale), and other essentials to organize the course.
- Clinical scenario training: ten case studies detail the hallmark features of situations that can lead to a cardiac surgical arrest (e.g., hypovolemia, tamponade, etc.), with matching clinical simulations via PowerPoint slides to illustrate physiologic changes and prompt trainee decision-making using standardized tools. Additional technology options for simple to advanced case simulations are also provided.
- Slide decks: PowerPoint slides are included for the new lectures – Introduction to Essentials of CSR, an overview of the STS protocol and essential role competencies (54 slides); Managing Cardiac Surgical Emergencies, etiologies of impaired cardiac output and a standardized approach to decision-making (44 slides); Emergency Use of Temporary Pacemakers After Cardiac Surgery, case studies detail functionality and troubleshooting (53 slides); Facility Specific Information for Regulatory Compliance, prompts local content per Joint Commission recommendations (e.g., equipment location, protocols, role expectations, etc., 18 slides); and Summary Scenario Cases, participants review and resolve ten arrest/pre-arrest situations (55 slides).
- Additional ECSR resources: Interactive resources will provide continued education and encourage ongoing communication regarding CSR topics via access to this website’s blog and newsletter, our YouTube channel, Cardiac Surgical Resuscitation Master Class, and a detailed bibliography regarding key issues.
Optional Sternum for Resternotomy Manikin:
For sites needing a specialized “open-chest” manikin for resternotomy practice, a removable sternum that fits a standard Resusci-Anne is available for separate purchase. This equipment enables realistic practice during the course, promoting a hands-on experience in preparing for and assisting with an emergency resternotomy procedure in the ICU. When fitted inside the chest of a standard Anne manikin (not included), participants can practice essential steps in supporting the surgical provider during these emergencies, such as setting up and maintaining the sterile field, assembling instruments, assisting with internal defibrillation, etc. This is an optional purchase and is not included with the resource tool-kit.
